Ultrasonography is used to help diagnose many conditions such as: heart disease, intestinal foreign bodies, tumors, liver disease, bladder stones, and so on. Also, it is used to examine pregnant animals, (dogs, cats, etc.) to determine the number of fetuses present, to ensure they are developing well, and to see how far along the pregnancy is. Ultrasound exams are similar to x-rays in that they show us what’s going on inside the chest or abdomen of your pet, without being invasive like surgery. Often they give us more detained information about various organs than x-rays can, and they are more likely to reveal small objects or tumors that an x-ray may miss. Also, organs can be biopsied using the ultrasound to guide the needle to the desired location, making this procedure safer and easier on your pet. Generally ultrasound exams can be performed with the patient wide awake, or only mildly sedated. Ask any of our staff or doctors about ultrasonography. It’s one more way we can provide the best veterinary care for your pet! |
