Know the difference

X-Ray vs Ultrasound vs Bloodwork

These three tools answer different questions. We often use two of them together.

01

X-Ray

Shows structure

Bones, the shape and size of organs, foreign objects, and fluid in the chest. Best for trauma, coughs, and suspected swallowed objects.

Best for: trauma, coughs, foreign body

02

Ultrasound

Shows detail & function

What's happening inside an organ, blood flow, masses, and bladder contents. Best for unexplained weight loss, abnormal bloodwork, or chronic vomiting.

Best for: weight loss, chronic vomiting

03

Bloodwork

Shows the chemistry

Organ function, infection, hydration, anemia, and hormones. Best as the first step in most non-trauma cases.

Best for: first step, most non-trauma cases

Our Approach

How we decide what test your pet needs

We start with a physical exam and history, then pick the test that gives the clearest answer, and the most cost-effective.

We explain before we run anything

You'll always know what we're recommending, why we're recommending it, and what it costs before we start.

1

Senior cat losing weight

Bloodwork first (kidney values, T4), then ultrasound if needed.

Lab → Ultrasound
2

Dog limping after a hike on the Iron Horse Trail

X-ray of the affected leg.

X-Ray
3

Vomiting dog who got into the garbage

X-ray for foreign body, plus bloodwork.

X-Ray + Lab
4

Older dog with a new cough

Chest x-ray, sometimes followed by a cardiac workup.

X-Ray → Cardiac
5

Cat straining to urinate

X-ray for bladder stones, urinalysis, sometimes ultrasound.

X-Ray + Lab + Ultrasound
