Saying goodbye to a pet is one of the hardest decisions you will ever face. Our job is to make that moment as peaceful as possible, for your pet and for you. The veterinary team at Kingsdale Animal Hospital has helped Kitchener families through this since 1973.
This is the question we hear most, and there’s rarely one clear answer. Instead, we look at patterns.
Quality of Life Assessments
Not sure where your pet stands? Book a quality of life consultation. We’ll examine your pet, walk through a structured quality of life scale with you, and give you an honest clinical opinion.
We book euthanasia appointments with extra time so nothing feels rushed. You’ll have a quiet, private room, and you can stay with your pet the entire time.
If you’d rather not be present, that’s okay too.
There is no wrong choice here, and our team will be with your pet either way.
For many pets, especially anxious cats and dogs with limited mobility, home is the calmest place to say goodbye. Their own bed, familiar smells, no car ride.
Our vets travel to homes across Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Breslau, and Elmira, from Stanley Park and Idlewood to Doon and Forest Heights.
In-Home Service Area
In-home euthanasia is part of our housecall service, and we’ll explain all costs when you book.
Knowing what happens often eases the fear of it. The process is the same at home or in clinic.
You’re welcome to have family members present, including children if you feel it’s right for them.
Sedation
Your pet receives a sedative, which takes takes a few minutes, and it’s a good time for quiet goodbyes.
The injection
Once your pet is sedate, your veterinarian gives the euthanasia injection. It is painless, and passing is peaceful, usually within a minute or two.
Take your time afterward
Take as long as you need. We will never rush you out.
We work with Gateway Pet Memorial, a trusted Ontario provider, to handle aftercare with the same respect your pet received in life. Options include:

Private CremationAshes returned to you
Your pet is cremated individually. Their ashes are returned to you in a container of your choosing, from simple wooden keepsake boxes to hand-crafted urns. Gateway offers a range of sizes and styles to suit what feels right for your family.
Some families keep the ashes at home. Others scatter them somewhere meaningful, incorporate them into a garden, or choose cremation jewelry so their pet stays close.
Communal CremationNo ashes returned
Your pet is cremated respectfully alongside other animals. Ashes are not separated or returned. A dignified choice for families who prefer not to receive ashes back.
